35mm film wedding photography: how we use it

What film adds to our work, and how it fits alongside digital photography.

We use 35mm film because we like the photographs it makes. The colour, grain and response to light have a character we enjoy, particularly in portraits, garden scenes and small details from the day.

Digital photography is part of the same work. We move between the two as the wedding develops, choosing the camera that suits what we’re photographing. Your gallery brings those images together.

01

What we like about film

Film can give colour and light a distinctive quality. Skin, fabric and greenery may look different from a digital photograph of the same scene, and the grain is part of the image rather than an effect added afterwards.

That character still depends on the light, exposure, film stock and processing. Film doesn’t make every photograph soft or washed out. We’re interested in clear compositions and strong colour as well as its texture.

02

How we use digital and film together

Digital lets us respond quickly to changing light and sequences of events. Film has a finite number of frames on each roll, which changes how we choose and time a photograph.

We don’t divide your day into separate digital and film sessions. We use both within the same coverage, without asking you to repeat the ceremony or a spontaneous moment for a second camera.

03

The subjects we’re drawn to

Portraits are one part of it, but we also photograph guests, rooms, flowers and the small details we notice as we move through a wedding. A table after drinks can be as interesting as the same table before anyone arrives.

The choices depend on the wedding in front of us. We look at the light and composition available rather than trying to recreate a fixed set of film photographs at every venue.

04

Look at more than one example

If you’re deciding whether you like film, look through a range of photographs in different light. A single favourite image won’t show you how it appears across a wedding.

Tell us which examples appeal to you and why. You may be responding to the colour, the framing or the people in the photograph as much as the medium. We’re happy to explain the differences and show you more.

What to discuss before booking

Ask how film is included in your coverage and how the photographs are delivered. If you have a particular request, raise it while we’re putting together your proposal so the expectations are clear.

The rest of the planning is about your wedding: the locations, light, schedule and people you want photographed. You don’t need a separate list of moments for each kind of camera.

Our galleries include both digital and 35mm photographs. Spend some time with them, and tell us which images you keep coming back to when we talk about your wedding.
