A Bundanon wedding: art, architecture and a weekend by the Shoalhaven
Some wedding venues invite you to build a world around them. Others already have a strong sense of place, and the most interesting celebrations take their lead from what’s there.
Bundanon, on the Shoalhaven River, is one of the latter. It’s an art destination with a connection to the Australian landscape, where contemporary architecture sits among bushland and river views. For couples drawn to art, design and a celebration with room to unfold over a weekend, it offers something quite different from the traditional country estate.
01
A ceremony with the river as your backdrop
The ceremony setting is a natural amphitheatre overlooking the Shoalhaven. It’s a view with enough presence that you can keep the design around you quite simple.
Rather than framing the ceremony with a large floral arch, you might be drawn to lower, sculptural arrangements that allow the river and landscape to remain part of the scene. A florist could bring in texture and colour that feels connected to the setting, while still giving the ceremony its own character.
For photography, it’s a setting that naturally gives context to the moments happening within it. The view can sit behind the people you love, while closer photographs hold the expressions and small interactions that make the ceremony yours.

Dinner inside the Boyd Education Centre
Designed by Glenn Murcutt, Wendy Lewin and Reg Lark, the Boyd Education Centre has a glass-fronted hall that looks out towards the river. Its architectural character makes it an interesting place to think about a wedding reception: the setting is contemporary, but the landscape remains close by.
A table design here could draw on the materials and colours around it. Think warm ivory linen, tactile ceramics, timber tones and a deeper accent colour carried through the flowers or candles. Soft fabrics against more structured forms would feel considered without making the room overly formal.
There’s also space to take the idea in a different direction. A cleaner palette with sculptural flowers could feel more architectural, while a richer mix of colour and texture could bring warmth to the hall as evening settles in. The right choice is the one that feels like you, with your planner and creative team bringing it together across the celebration.
03
A weekend with more room together
Bundanon offers one- and two-night wedding packages, with accommodation on site. For a couple bringing people together from different places, the appeal of a longer celebration is the time it creates around the wedding itself.
A welcome gathering can be a chance for guests to meet before the wedding day. The following morning might be slower, with time to catch up over breakfast before everyone heads home. Those quieter parts of a weekend can become just as meaningful as the formal moments, particularly when you’ve brought your favourite people into one place.
The Bridge, designed by Kerstin Thompson Architects, has accommodation with views across the landscape. It adds another architectural detail to the experience, and another reason the setting might resonate if design is something you both care about.

An art-minded approach to photography
At a place like Bundanon, the photographs can move between two distinct moods. There’s the structure of the architecture, with its lines, materials and relationship to the landscape. Then there are the people: guests arriving, conversations over drinks and the energy that builds through dinner.
Couple portraits might draw on the shape and texture of the buildings, while the rest of the coverage stays close to how the celebration actually feels. Neither needs to take over the day. A little direction can create something striking, with plenty of room left for the moments you didn’t plan.
