A Rippon Lea wedding: garden romance and a little poolside glamour
There’s a particular kind of charm to a wedding venue that feels a little different as the day unfolds. At Rippon Lea Estate in Melbourne, the gardens set a romantic scene, while the pool and ballroom bring an unexpected touch of old Hollywood to the celebration.
That character has a story behind it. In the late 1930s, then-owner Louisa Jones replaced the estate’s original ballroom with a swimming pool inspired by Hollywood and transformed the former billiard room into a new ballroom. It’s an unusual piece of the estate’s history, and one that still gives the setting its personality today.
For couples drawn to heritage architecture but looking for a celebration with a little more playfulness, it’s an interesting balance.
01
A ceremony among the gardens
Rippon Lea’s gardens offer a sense of separation from the city around them. There are lawns framed by established trees, a lake, an orchard and a fernery, each bringing a different texture to the landscape.
A garden ceremony here could feel beautifully understated. Rather than trying to transform the space, you might let the greenery provide the backdrop and introduce flowers in a palette that feels personal to you. Soft ivory and pale yellow would sit gently against the foliage, while a deeper burgundy or a single, more unexpected colour could give the setting a different energy.
The ceremony itself is often where some of the most meaningful photographs happen. There’s the wider scene, of course, but also the quieter details: someone reaching for a hand, a familiar face in the crowd, and the moments just before you walk back down the aisle together.
02
Cocktails by the pool
After the softness of the garden, the pool terrace offers a change of mood. The lines of the water and the elevated terrace give this part of the estate a more structured feel, with an ivy-covered pergola and roses adding to its character.
It’s easy to imagine guests gathering here with a drink, the formality of the ceremony giving way to conversation and the first real sense of the party ahead. A black-tie dress code would feel at home against the setting, though a more relaxed approach could be just as lovely.
For photographs, that contrast is part of the appeal. The garden lends itself to something softer and more intimate, while the poolside setting offers strong lines, reflections and a little more movement. Neither needs to feel overly posed. The best images often happen when there’s room for people to settle in and enjoy where they are.
03
An evening in the ballroom
The ballroom opens towards the pool, connecting the reception to the terrace outside. It’s a setting that invites a shift in atmosphere as the evening begins, with the romance of the gardens giving way to dinner, speeches and a fuller room.
For a design direction, you could take a subtle cue from the estate’s 1930s history without making the celebration feel themed. Pale table linen, polished silver, candlelight and flowers in one confident colour would feel considered alongside the architecture. Or you might choose warmer tones and softer textures for something more intimate.
What makes a room memorable isn’t necessarily how much is added to it. Often, it’s the way the details work together and how the space feels once your favourite people are in it.
04
Photographs with room for both
A Rippon Lea wedding has the potential for a beautiful mix of imagery: considered portraits shaped by the estate’s architecture, alongside the unplanned moments that give the day its feeling.
A little direction can be helpful when you want a portrait that feels more editorial. The rest of the time, there’s value in stepping back and letting the people, conversations and atmosphere speak for themselves. The two approaches can sit comfortably together without turning your celebration into a photoshoot.
If giving your guests something personal to take home is part of the experience you’re imagining, our Portrait Experience offers a dedicated moment for them too, with portraits created during the celebration and prints to take home.
